Breakout star of MTV's A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila,
Fort Lauderdale-based firefighter Dani Campbell set hearts
aflame while parading the catwalk in her firefighting uniform
for the premiere episode. And her charm and appeal just grew
from there.
Facing off with mainly femme women and a slew of all-American
guys for openly bisexual Tequila's affection, Campbell's
own brand of “futch”—a mix of femme and
butch, as she calls it—landed her as one of the show's
final two.
In the end, Tequila picked Bobby Banhart over Campbell. But
with Campbell's own clothing line and a new television show
in the works, the “futch” firefighter with the
big heart's star continues to rise. We caught up with Campbell
to find out what life after Tila Tequila is like.
Dani, you achieved insta-fame during the run of the show.
What are you up to these days?
I've been traveling and speaking with high school and college
students. It's a lot of fun.
On the show you came off as both real and approachable,
which is tough to do on a reality show. What do you think
it is about you that speaks to so many different types of
fans?
They seem to like me for who I am. It's a great feeling.
And I'm trying to stay who I am and not let it get to my
head. I think people appreciate my honesty and optimism.
What's the strangest or the wildest request you've gotten
from a fan?
I get, “Marry me! Marry me!” a lot. But my manager
gets calls from people inviting me to their houses to party
with them. I wish I could.
And you're launching a clothing line. Can you tell me about
it?
It's called Futch Apparel. It's not just for women. I'm trying
to break stereotypes. It's guys' style tailored for smaller
guys and women. It's very fashion forward.
Has it always been a dream of yours to create a fashion
line?
Personally, I have trouble shopping, so I've always been
thinking—what can I invent? This was my chance to make
one of my dreams come true.
What else is happening career wise?
I'm working on a new show. Nothing is set in stone.
I'm assuming you'll be the star.
I hope so.
What do you say to people who think that Tila's picking
a man over you in the end just reinforces the hetero stereotype
that men will always win out over women?
I didn't feel that way about the ending. But that relationship
with Tila and Bobby never worked out. It was a slap in the
face to anyone who believes that stereotype.
You're going to be appearing at the Dinah Shore Weekend
this year and so is Tila. Is there a chance at another shot
of love between you?
We haven't ever talked since the show ended. I don't even
know if we're friends, so I don't think so.
