Into the Groove

By Paul V.

The big music news this week? It's all about the Coachella Music Festival, baby! The 2006 lineup is frickin' unbelievable: Night one finds Depeche Mode headlining and being joined by Franz Ferdinand, Ladytron, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Hard-Fi, She Wants Revenge, Audio Bullys, Imogen Heap, Living Things, and many more. Tool headlines night two along with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, Paul Oakenfold, Scissor Sisters, Matisyahu, James Blunt, TV On The Radio, Sleater-Kinney, Coldcut, The Go! Team, Metric, The Dears, and Giant Drag, among tons more. The event takes place April 29-30 at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, and tickets are on sale now so get yours today! ... Bangles vocalist Susannah Hoffs and singer/songwriter Matthew Sweet have teamed up for an album of duets, covering their favorite pop tunes from the '60s. The Under The Covers Vol. 1 CD finds the duo taking on tracks from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, The Who, Neil Young, Velvet Underground, Mamas and the Papas and more. Find it in stores on April 18 ... The Cult, who has been through several breaks, will be back in action in 2006. The band, which last played in 2002, has announced a number of live dates for March, including the Henry Fonda Theatre on March 7 ... UK queer rockers Placebo will take a stab at their band name by calling their upcoming album Meds. The disc is expected in March, and the NME reports that the album features a pair of guest appearances: REM's Michael Stipe is heard on "Broken Promise," while The Kills' VV appears on the title track. "Because I Want You" will be the disc's first single overseas and it'll include remixes by Bloc Party and Ladytron ... Our favorite indie rocker, Bright Eyes singer Conor Oberst, will be honored by GLAAD at their annual Media Awards in April. The outspoken and fiercely anti-Bush singer will share a Special Recognition honor with director John Cameron Mitchell for the video, "First Day Of My Life." ... Pop singer Pink is having a field day mocking all the skanky starlets of Hollywood in her new video for the song "Stupid Girls." She makes fun of Jessica Simpson's car-wash video, takes shots at Mary-Kate Olsen's thrift-store clothes, Lindsay Lohan's car accidents, and Paris Hilton's sex tape. Pink says she doesn't have to name names, but it's obvious who she's making fun of ... And finally, set your TiVo to catch Britney Spears, who guest stars on an episode of Will & Grace on April 13. She'll appear as a Christian conservative sidekick to Jack, who hosts his own talk show. Jack's fictional network, Out TV, is bought by a Christian TV network, and that leads to Spears horning in with her cooking segment called "Cruci-fixin's." OK, all at once, let's hear those collective groans
