A Peek Inside Adult Video with Mickey Skee

On a sad note, the wonderfully funny and bratty Johnny Rey died of testicular cancer of all things in January. I knew Rey from his very beginnings in the adult industry, and he always said he wanted to come in and be "the Madonna of gay porn" and really shake up the business. He did in a lot of ways. He brought a lot of flamboyance to it, riding in on a horse at the second Gay Video Guide Awards at the TomKat Theatre, and starting his own modeling company as well as production company. He won his Best Actor GayVN trophy for the first major gay porn musical, Romeo and Julian and he wanted very much to get respect as a director, but never broke out of the B-list movies he was known for, although he made some goofball classics like Pheromones the Smell of Sex and The Island of Dr. Porneaux which made him more the Ed Wood of porn rather than the Madonna.

Johnny Rey was one of the colorful characters of an era of the Porn Brat Pack that is long gone, but his flashes of Jayne Mansfield-like self promotion and over-the-top self indulgences can't help but bring a smile with those memories.
