Cecilia Stalin -- Straight Up

www.ceciliastalin.com

This gorgeous Swedish jazz girl got her start as the ethereal voice on Koop's "Waltz for Koop," but that gave no clue of what kind of lovely and complex jazz chops she truly had. Straight Up is pure, flawless vocal jazz to make Nancy Wilson, Cleo Laine, and Dee Dee Bridgewater proud, with the rapturous bossa nova of the title track and the driving juke joint groove of "Bogaloo Boy" standing out as the most absolutely intoxicating brews in the lot.

The Gay Places

www.thegayplaces.com

This quirky but endearing site conceived by a Seattle dyke sets out to demystify cities for LGBT travelers by alerting them to "places that are alert, animated, bouncy, brash, carefree, chipper, chirpy, convivial, devil-may-care, festiveÉ" In a word, gay. While it has only three online guides to date (Seattle, New York and Houston), more are imminent, and its simple Goings-On/Eat Here/Sleep Here/Play Here structure makes it easy to navigate for quick travel hints.

Google Base

base.google.com

This new add-on to the Net monolith gives anybody an absolutely free outlet for a Web presence, though anything adult is verboten. Still, for the casual surfer it's a great option for a free Web page. Just choose an item type (consult their category list or add your own), add pictures and descriptors, and publish. Your page has its own URL and immediately shows up on Google without having to being submitted or waiting for their Web crawler to find it.

John Jay Harper

www.johnjayharper.com

We love our paranormal marketing pitches. This site came to us via a press release for a book called Tranceformers, citing trance states as proof of the dead hitting up the living for a chat. Take it away fellas: "This 'trance' is the doorway to the fifth dimensional field of what is known as cosmic consciousness. He calls trance the 'Rosetta Stone' that unlocks the mysteries of existence. Dr. Harper concludes that the universe is a hologram: one whole message. He sees our DNA molecule as the simplest form of a hologram. 'Our DNA molecule is tuned to the geomagnetic cycles of consciousness of Gaia, our Sun, and Milky Way Galaxy,' he explains. 'This is what the shaman does in trance: taps into DNA transmissions.'"
