Dining and entertainment suggestions that might fly under
your radar.
Let’s play Master and Servant
Barbara Eden, as an uncorked genie, and Larry Hagman, as
her uncomfortable astronaut-master, demonstrated chemistry
that was, well, magical in the long-running ‘60s sitcom
I Dream of Jeannie. Want to see the two tangle with guests
like Paul Lynde, Sammy Davis Jr. and Groucho Marx? Your wish
has been granted—all 31 episodes from the sophomore
season are now available in the four-disc set, I Dream of
Jeannie: The Complete Second Season.
Hearts of Gold
“Are you asking me if I want to go out every night
and sing 'Let's Impeach the President'? Fuck, yes!” So
said David Crosby when Neil Young asked Crosby, Stills and
Nash if they'd consider spending the summer touring with
him in support of Young's anti-war album, Living With War.
The legendary quartet's summer-long trek is sure to include
a large chunk of Young's vigorous protest album as well as
classics from their deep catalogs. The tour rolls into the
Southland with shows in Irvine on July 30 and the Hollywood
Bowl on July 31 (limited seats available at ticketmaster.com).
What Really Matters
In Rush Limbaugh’s America, the “facts” are
whatever he says they are and cruelty is explained away as
a “joke.” (When gay Queen frontman Freddie Mercury
died from AIDS, Limbaugh opened his show with “Another
one bites the dust.”) His huge radio ratings spawned
snide conservative imitators such as Bill O’Reilly
and Ann Coulter. Finally progressives fought back. Among
the best is ex-right winger and openly gay David Brock who
created Media Matters for America (www.mediamatters.org),
a Web site that counters conservative “facts” with
the uncontested truth. Get angry and be amused and informed
simultaneously.
Dive In
If fried chicken, hush puppies, smothered pork chops, jambalaya,
hot links, peach cobbler, and catfish make your mouth water,
a trip to Aunt Kizzy's Back Porch (4325 Glencoe Ave., C-9,
Villa Marina Center, Marina del Rey) is a must. Possibly
the best soul food in L.A.—in a very unlikely location.

The Hot Ticket
When good girl Cassandra begins hanging with the delinquent
crowd, she encounters heroin, prostitution, and even (gasp)
lesbianism in the sizzling hit musical One Way Ticket To
Hell at West Hollywood’s Lee Strasberg Creative Center
(7936 Santa Monica Blvd.). For tickets, call (866) 811-4111.
Beat the Heat
The blistering summer temperatures can wreck the clearest
of complexions. We recommend stopping by West Hollywood’s
Euphoria Face and Body (8253 Santa Monica Blvd.) for a balancing
facial treatment. Your Euphoria facialist will cleanse your
face deeply, do gentle extractions, and moisturize your skin
with an ultrasound machine. With a brighter and clearer complexion,
you’ll feel rejuvenated, confident, and ready to make
your social life sizzle this summer. For an appointment,
call (323) 656-9944.
Lobster palooza
Have a taste for lobster? Bib up, head over to West Hollywood’s
Mark’s Restaurant (861 N. La Cienega Blvd.), and get
to crackin’ at their summer-long Lobster Bake Special
every Wednesday night. For $23.95, you’ll get your
choice of either New England clam chowder or Caesar salad
and a one-and-a-half pound Maine lobster. Dig in! Make your
reservation now at (310) 652-5252.
