I’ve heard folks comment that San Diego is not a strong
music, art, or theater town, but I totally disagree. With
award-winning plays being presented at The Old Globe and
the La Jolla Playhouse (most recently the Tony-winning musical
Jersey Boys), and a fantastic annual Art Walk festival in
Little Italy, among many other special events throughout
the year, I’d like to share some highlights of the
many opportunities we all have to get a little culture added
to our life. Keep in mind, too, that Diversionary Theatre
offers the best in LGBT plays and entertainment. The venue
is the nation’s third oldest gay and lesbian theater
and their new season kicks off with When Pigs Fly on July
21.

The Old Globe offers Out At The Globe, an opportunity for
gay and lesbian theater lovers to gather and socialize prior
to a performance. Upcoming “Out” events include
a presentation of either Othello or The Sisters Rosensweig
on Thursday, July 27, and a choice of A Midsummer Night’s
Dream or Lincolnesque on Thursday, Aug. 31.
A world premiere of J. Marcus Newman’s Moms In America
is an official San Diego Pride event, now playing Thursdays
through Sundays through July 30 at 2790 Lytton St. in Loma
Portal, across from Liberty Station at the Navy Training
Center. For more information, visit www.guisegallery.com,
or call (619) 683-2256.

America: Screenprints From the Collection of the Jordan Schnitzer
Family Foundation at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa

Our annual pride concert will be held on Thursday, July
27, and features San Diego’s four LGBT-identified choral
ensembles—Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego, In AChord,
the San Diego Men’s Chorus, and the San Diego Women’s
Chorus—all in one setting. The concert starts at 7:30
p.m. and will be presented for the first time in the newly
renovated Birch North Park Theatre. Tickets are now available
and special guests include the Hillcrest Wind Ensemble. Listen
for members of the San Diego Men’s Chorus to serenade
patrons attending the festivities at Hamburger Mary’s
on Sunday, July 16, as part of their ongoing fund-raising
efforts. To learn more about the chorus and take a peek at
their upcoming calendar, visit www.sdmc.org.
Also, the Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego will present
their summer concerts on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 8 p.m. and
Sunday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. Titled An American in Paris, the
performances will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist
Church at 4190 Front St. in Hillcrest. For ticket information
and more details, visit www.GMCSD.com.
Please join the board members of the GSDBA Charitable Foundation
on Saturday, July 15, at 6 p.m. at Baja Betty’s, as
the group will present their annual scholarship awards. This
year the organization is proud to announce that 10 candidates
will receive scholarship awards amounting to a total of $20,000.
A suggested $25 donation is requested.
Let me share one final thought about Jersey Boys with you:
John Lloyd Young, who won best performance by a leading actor
in a musical at the Tony Awards last month, took my breath
away. He offers reason enough to get out and explore the
dynamic world of culture in San Diego. Now if only we could
get a good explanation as to why Madonna chose to bypass
our city on her current tour.
